Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album “Girls Generation”, released on June 6th of last year, sold 16,000 copies this past week, giving them fifth place on Oricon’s weekly album sales chart. This is the first time in history that an album by a Korean artist has placed in the Top 10 for seventeen weeks. The previous record holder was the original soundtrack for the Korean drama “Winter Sonata”, which remained in the Top 10 for sixteen weeks. ”Winter Sonata” was released in September of 2003.

In addition, Girls’ Generation holds the record among foreign artists for the most album sales in a week for a debut album with 232,000 copies sold. Currently, 780,000 copies of “Girls’ Generation” have been sold, which includes their repackaged album.

“The Boys” also made impressive headway. It was the best selling Korean album of 2011 with 385,348 copies sold.
