In the recently unveiled list of winners for the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2012 (MTV VMAJ 2012), Girls’ Generation, also known as Shoujo Jidai in Japan, won the ‘Best Album of the Year’ award for their first Japanese album ‘Girls’ Generation’ among big name nominees Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Juju and fellow K-pop girl group KARA.

In addition to this award, Girls’ Generation were also nominated for the ‘Best Video of the Year’ award, which eventually went to EXILE for their song ‘Rising Sun’.

The group’s first full-length Japanese album ‘Girls’ Generation’ was released in June last year and is still recording high sales with the album certified ‘Million’ by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) earlier this month, which makes them the second Korean artist to have achieved the ‘Million’ certification after their senior BoA’s ‘Best of Soul’ compilation album more than seven years ago.

Girls’ Generation were no strangers to the MTV VMAJ awards as they won two out of three nominations last year, namely the ‘Best Group Video’ and ‘Best Karaokee! Song’ awards for the Japanese remake of their hit single ‘Genie’, where they beat Black Eyed Peas, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Ikimono-gakari and w-inds for the awards.

The awards represent the success of the group in Japan, who had made their debut in the country only less than two years ago in August 2010, and their upcoming release ‘Paparazzi’ has already gotten huge support and response from Japanese and international fans alike. The group has also kicked off their promotional activities for ‘Paparazzi’ on TV Asahi’s ‘Music Station’ on Friday.
